What’s happening in ARC?

The COVID pandemic changed our world and will forever change healthcare. For hospitals, it has been a test of resourcefulness, resiliency, and responsiveness. Led by Prof. Eyal Zimlichman and launched in October 2019, ARC ‘s open innovation model is a critical component of Sheba Medical Center’s COVID-19 strategy. The driving mission behind ARC is to improve patient care by using innovation to provide real value to patients.

Israeli image analysis company, Nucleai, and Sheba Medical Center’s ARC have announced a strategic collaboration where the Nucleai team will be able to access Sheba’s extensive repository of pathology, clinical, and other multi-omics data.

Israel made history by launching a satellite into space carrying a tiny laboratory in which four medical scientific experiments to test drug resistance will be conducted under conditions of microgravity. Dido III, manufactured by SpacePharma, an Israeli company, and also involving Israel’s Sheba Medical Center, took off on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. The Jerusalem Post reports that it was launched by Arianespace on the Flight VV16 mission and reached its destination in space around 4:51 am the following morning.

Sheba Medical Center has partnered with Newsight Imaging to assess the effectiveness of its newly developed saliva test, which uses a spectral device that shines light on the specimen. Professor Eli Shwartz, Director of the Center for Geographic Medicine, is leading the trial and claims the diagnostic test is easier to use than PCR swabs. The new method will not only be more convenient but will also be cheaper. Results are promising, as the artificial intelligence-based device has identified evidence of the virus at a 95% success rate.

On August 7, 2020, ARC, held a competition in which startups pitched telemedicine projects in the field of women's health. The companies, representing a variety of femtech fields, presented technologies with applications for gynecology.

Data scientists from across Israel used Sheba Medical Center's coronavirus patient data to present insights and solutions for combating the disease through a challenge launched by ARC in March 2020. On June 11, 2020, six finalists presented their solutions to a panel of judges as part of a final round to choose three winning teams. The selected projects will be implemented at Sheba Medical Center and validated at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

As part of its vision to transform healthcare by 2030, Sheba Medical Center collaborates with the Israel Center for Medical Simulation to establish HealthSpace 2030. This patient room of the future is a space to test technologies that will revolutionize how care is delivered.

HoloLens 2 devices provided by Microsoft were put to good use for the training of medical staff at Sheba Medical Center during the coronavirus pandemic. The first training was on how to operate a ventilator for patients.

Israel’s renowned Sheba Medical Center will be an anchor tenant in the first phase of development at the former Michael Reese Hospital site in Bronzeville, developers said Thursday. Sheba will occupy up to 25% of a 500,000 square-foot medical research and innovation center, said Scott Goodman, a partner at Farpoint Development. His company is part of a joint venture leading the redevelopment of the Michael Reese site.

Israeli-U.S. venture capital fund, Triventures, launched on Tuesday a $40 million fund with Sheba Medical Center known as Triventures ARC. It will invest in early-stage digital health and smart medical devices. Triventures ARC already made its first closing for the fund. A company official said the closing was for more than half of the total. The first investment was in Lynx.MD, an Israeli startup whose cloud platform enables hospitals and medical firms to securely access and share any type of data in the healthcare environment and develop artificial intelligence-based digital health applications to improve the quality of care and reduce costs.
